After a European vacation hiatus, I am finally back with a new essay. Today I take a look at what makes up the construction of a good hex for a hex crawl for D&D and Torchbearer.
This table was inspired by a quote from Robin D. Laws’ saying
When in doubt, blindfold yourself, take any two GURPS sourcebooks off the shelf at random, and combine the results.
Ok, this is a bit pointless but also… not. I mean, who has a d140 anyway? Or in fact even so many GURPS books? But I wanted to list all the GURPS books, excluding some of the sub-books for different lines, no matter how good they are (so e.g. no Discworld Also, and none of the Traveller supplements EXCEPT Interstellar Wars, which is a distinct enough setting in my book).
I bet I missed some.
So what is it? Just a list of all GURPS sourcebooks except the most mechanical.
I’ve been thinking of adding some quality fan-made books as well, which are floating around the net. I bet one could get some good stuff out of those as well.
I never really cared for GURPS as a rule system, but I always love using their sourcebooks as a starting point to work out ideas for my own games. And most of the stuff is indeed so generic that I can easily rework things into DnD, Traveller, Shadowrun, or what have you. So take a d140 (sigh, or go to a website that does it for you) and roll up your next campaign.

Players will notoriously assume a lot about your game just by looking at the character sheet without reading anything.
New GM's will not remember every niche ruling, so keep it as intuitive as possible. If the intuitive way to play your game sucks, regardless of the actual rules the game will suffer.

Our regular #rpg game was cancelled this week, so we played a game of "I'm sorry did you say street magic". It was the first time playing either a GM-ful game or a world building game for most players, so doing them both together was a real change of style! The Marvel Superheros RPG I used to love playing in the 1990s used a Karma system. It was the 1980s "MSHRPG" made by TSR. Very complex and quite good system, honestly, although I'm not a gaming expert by any means: neither video, nor board games, nor #ttrpgs.
If you were a good guy, doing good things would increase your karma. Doing bad things would decrease or even wipe out your karma.
If you were a bad guy, doing bad things would increase your karma.
There were many times that the heroes would attempt to neutralize a foe but go just a little too far, leading to the villain dying. That would zero out the hero's karma, a phenomenon we liked to call the "Karma Toilet." IIRC, one of us would actually play a .wav file of a toilet flushing when it happened, or walk to the nearest bathroom and flush a toilet, or something.
Man, the 90s were fun. I really miss constructive boredom and community.
