Jesus. This feels like it’s calculated to make every other third party dev on the official plugin server nervous. https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/12/24268637/wordpress-org-matt-mullenweg-acf-fork-secure-custom-fields-wp-engine
@mcc And not even banned it!! Taking over its space on the package registry for his own company to distribute a fork, with no good justification whatsoever
@misty Third party devs don’t need to be nervous so long as they show the proper love and devotion to Matt /s
@misty The fact it will auto-update to Automattic's bastardised version and will, because of the way they've edited it, remove any premium additions you paid for will silently break websites. For new users, they've stripped out lots/all of the documentation links.
@misty if he keeps this up i'm going to have to start deciding what to try and convince all my wordpress clients to switch to
@rst oh good to know... i'll keep an eye out
@misty I have altered the deal. Pray I don’t alter it further.
@misty @MOOMANiBE I don’t do plugin dev, but moving my blog to a new platform just skyrocketed in priority
The fact that it took the official Wordpress "security team" a whopping 5 days to realize that the data in $_POST is also accessible through $_REQUEST tells you everything there is to know about them.
If Automattic were actually concerned about IT security, they'd shut down their company and switch to woodworking.
@misty @mcc even microsoft at their most comic book villain would have made their own plugin with easy migration, distribute it for free with the same features as premium, and then break compatibility with the existing plugin.
Makes me wonder what else is in that EULA, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he’s posting blogs on other peoples websites soon and stealing users’ store income. Absolute mania. No one with any kind of business is going to touch Wordpress with a barge pole after this
@misty There was a small Windows in the beginning when I was a bit more in Matt's corner. I'm not anymore at all. I think both sides have done some things, but at this point I have switched to WPE's corner. Matt needs to go at this point, and I would not be surprised if we see a big fork from some of the larger agencies using WP tbh.
