bad idea: a site which categorizes mechanical keyboards by their cost per key

Foone🏳️‍⚧️

amazon wired basics full size USB keyboard is 0.11$/key (105 keys, 11.99$)

while the HHKB Studio 60% Hotswap Bluetooth Mechanical Keyboard is 4.73$/key (61 keys, 289$)

this idea mainly came about because I was wondering how out-of-range (in terms of price per key) a theoretical 8-10$ per key keyboard would be.

(I was gonna use one Raspberry Pi Pico W per key)

@foone and then use wifi to send each keystroke...

@foone (Bluetooth, of course, is only used for interfacing to a host machine)

@foone I like this idea. You just have the keys scattered around the house. The V key is under the bed. The W is in the medicine cabinet. E is next to the lightswitch. K is under the sink. You'd have to carry the modifier keys around in your pockets.

@foone this is true home scale computing

@phooky @foone I have two separate, competing thoughts:

An escape room where you have to find not only a password, but also individual one-key keyboards hidden in drawers and under and behind things, and you have to co-ordinate as a team to type it out quickly.

Ctrl and Alt keys on a belt clip that just pair to whatever computer you sit in front of.

@timixretroplays @foone i like the idea of writing down your passwords as bil keane style dotted line maps

@timixretroplays @phooky ooh, that makes me think of the idea of a wearable computer that tracks you, so it works for whichever computer you're closest to.

@foone @phooky Foone's Magic KVM. If it can also give focus to whichever app is showing the biggest on any given screen I'm looking at, so I can stop typing "Thanks for getting in touch" into YouTube and making videos play backwards at 25% speed in French with Korean subtitles, that'd be ideal

@timixretroplays @phooky I've been saying since I first got multiple monitors, I want focus-follows-eyes.

(just not enough to deal with any of the hacks to make that kinda possible)

@foone @timixretroplays @phooky I need this. Or maybe focus follows brain, to where I think I’m typing

@brouhaha @jpm @timixretroplays @phooky I have ADHD, I don't /have/ any focus.

@foone @timixretroplays @phooky Every time I look at a window and type, and my input doesn't appear there, I'm furious.

Technology is failing us, let's start over.

@foone

both keyboard and Beowulf cluster

@foone Then place each key at a different location around the house…

@foone I was briefly concerned, but it turns out older group buy boards from the bad old days are just about in that range. The Cannonkeys satisfaction75's first run was 7.76usd/key before shipping, switches, and keycaps! :pearbutterlaugh:

@foone Isn’t that what prebuilt ergo split keyboards run for kinda? 😅

@foone
ZSA Voyager is $7 per key 👀 (but I guess that's a special case 😅)

@foone

Optimus Maximus keyboard ~$14 per key (each key includes a 48x48 display)

(actual switches were Cherry ML, pretty much garbage in the mechanical keyboard community)

@foone amateur league. The Seneca (Norbauer) is $41.38/key (87 keys, $3600)
