@atomicpoet I think you mean:

doing EIA608 captions is great!
there are many tools available.
none of them work

So here's how the various sensors map to that string shown above.
Two positions are special:
7 has no sensor.
3 is present but unused, because sensor 7 is missing.

So the sensors seem to be built into the structure of the PCB. Fancy.

Show thread

also I was wrong about uppercase/lowercase in that screenshot: it's using lowercase as a notation for "is upsidedown"

Show thread

I forgot how much I hate bluetooth LE programming.
I can't get it to change the LED display, or read any letters.
I think I need to send some "HEY GO INTO LETTER MODE" commands first, but I'm not sure what they are.

Show thread

interesting. there's definitely code in here that cares about case, which is something these letters don't do.
So maybe they were planning to also do an uppercase/lowercase version?

Show thread

so let's look into the app and see if we can figure out how to talk to this thing over bluetooth.

Show thread

okay yeah it's definitely capacitive.
by putting a removed sticker on it, I can get it to recognize the right letter, but touching it with my finger causes it to freak out and switch to other letters

Show thread

thought I'd check if it has a profanity filter.
nope! (at least not in this mode)

Show thread

and it doesn't recognize if I put a letter down with the sticker facing up. so it's not just a pressure sensor.

Show thread

it recognizes letters if they're upside down, but blinks the light under the letter.

other than letters that can be inverted (O) or letters that mean other things when inverted (M/W)

Show thread

anyway I can put letters on here and they show up in-game.

Show thread

interesting that it wants to calibrate my playset. also I miscalibrated it. whoops.

Show thread

wow. I can tell it I have a non-binary child in the app.

Finally a gender selection screen that doesn't make me angry!
