How is it that Americans manage to have not one, but TWO standard sizes for printing paper, which are both different to the standard the entire rest of the world uses?

@hugh I expect nothing less from a nation that celebrates World Standards Day on a different day than the ISO World Standards Day

US: ansi.org/meetings_events/wsw18

ISO: iso.org/world-standards-day.ht

@andrewjbtw @hugh @kensanata ...which reminds me: how on earth did we end up with not only daylight savings time existing in half of the countries of the world and then seriously changing to summer time *𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬*!!

@dennis

The Treaty of Westphalia?

All clock time is a collective hallucination, but it's even worse than you think: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight

@andrewjbtw @kensanata

@hugh @andrewjbtw @kensanata OMG, it is indeed worse than I thought! I guess need to meditate on this realization... 😄

@dennis stuff that gets me: “a few zones are offset by 30 or 45 minutes (e.g. Newfoundland Standard Time is UTC−03:30, Nepal Standard Time is UTC+05:45, and Indian Standard Time is UTC+05:30).” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_zon
@hugh @andrewjbtw

@hugh this gets better and better! Thank you for pointing out Australia! “The Indian Pacific train has its own time zone – a so-called "train time" when travelling between Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and Port Augusta, South Australia”
@dennis @andrewjbtw

@kensanata @dennis @andrewjbtw Did you notice Broken Hill is on South Australian time even though it’s in New South Wales? 🙃

@kensanata @hugh @andrewjbtw Why, just why didn't I take the blue pill 😂
Also, anyone remember the "netbeats" that swatch came up with? They even got a youth TV channel here in Germany to announce that time. Ah, the innocent 90s!!!
Well, at least there is a chance that the EU will stop daylight savings time so as someone regularly in touch with friends in the Middle east and Asia i would need to do less arithmetic.

@dennis That's the Swatch thing with the 100 beats, "independent of global time zones" but basically a new timezone centered on Biel? Good times!
