update: these are amazing and helpful documents that I am clearly not in the right headspace to read today (might be the massive server outage, constant reminders of society crumbling in the news), because all I can think about is that preservation, access, and loss are an ouroboros that will never fit into a spreadsheet

TGIF

Taking a Friday afternoon campus-wide server outage as an opportunity to catch up on reading: NDSA Levels of Preservation 2.0, DLF's Levels of Born-Digital Access, NARA's file format preservation plans.....quite the month!

Next Thursday, for World Digital Preservation Day I'll be live-streaming configuration of new environments for the EaaSI Sandbox. Please tune in and chat Linux, RDM, QEMU and EaaSI with me!

Does anyone know of any good tutorials or resources for learning Docker? Like a Carpentry or Programming-Historian style intro?

maybe don't set up Docker and bridged networks for VMs willy-nilly on your laptop when you have no idea how networking works and then spend waaaaaaay too much time trying to figure out why you can't connect to the department SMB share

I'm in a podcatcher conundrum:

Pocket Casts is much better designed (other than their WILD use of the word "archive") but is missing Stitcher-exclusive shows and back catalogs

Stitcher has the Premium content but alphabetizes shows starting with "The" under "T"

What do I do

Howdy! If you're interested at all in the BitCurator/EaaSI crossover hackathon next week at iPres, why not sign up for our dedicated Slack space?

If you're not going to Amsterdam, no worries - neither am I! We hope the hackathon can be a launching pad for a number of ongoing communal documentation and scripting projects that we've always wanted to see/make. Suggest, converse, contribute!

now, what's the easiest way to start pushing people to use your ProtonMail account instead of Gmail without them a) hating you or b) missing a bunch of messages

Successfully migrated all personal files from Google Drive to a Nextcloud instance on a Digital Ocean droplet!

Also got Collabora Online running with it for in-browser editing and sharing - seemed like it had a lower overhead than OnlyOffice, a bit finicky to set up but seems to be working well

never mind, needed the Apache server running too!

(hey thanks for the tutorials @platypus !!)

Any Archivists Toolkit users remember an issue where you set up your local MySQL database, install AT, initialize and connect the database, launch AT and log in and it just....doesn't do anything?

Changes are coming to The Patch Bay!

Disappointed about the lack of new content for the past uhhhhhh year? I'm working to fix that. Read more here:

Love to spend all morning prepping a presentation to the university library community that then does not happen because the IT guy "spaced"

So I finally feel ready to start tackling the Great Google Divorce (it will be a long, and, given my preference for Android, possibly fruitless journey, but let's see where it goes)

First up: replacing Drive and Docs. I think I want to go with Nextcloud + OnlyOffice integration: anyone have hosting recommendations??

Hey digipres.club! Follow along with the shared notes for our EaaSI/FCoP workshop today: "Multithreading Software Preservation and Emulation"

#GitHub is blocking users based on national origin, citing US trade controls law restrictions....

People from #Iran, #Syria, #Crimea, #Cuba, and North Korea woke up one day to lose access to all their public and private repositories. There's reporting that even people *who traveled* to any of those countries in the last 2 years are losing their data...

And #GitHub has not said ONE WORD ABOUT IT.
